97 Flood and Rotary Involvement

In April of 1997 the twin cities of Grand Forks, ND and East Grand Forks, MN were devastated by a record flood of the Red River.  The event caused the largest evacuation of a city since the Civil War.  There was also a major fire in the downtown area of Grand Forks while it was covered by four foot deep flood waters.

Rotarians played a big part in the recovery of our communities.  After the flood the Rotary clubs in our two cities received more than $200,000 in funds from Rotarians the world over.  Our local clubs distributed these funds to those in need.  We also received truck loads of books and toys and other supplies.

Our clubs want to say Thank You to everyone who helped in some way with the recovery process.  In addition to the money and supplies, many Rotarians traveled to the area to help with cleanup and rebuilding.
